Abstract
In addition to the conventional use of hydrogen by industry, hydrogen is considered globally as a potential new low- and zero-carbon energy carrier for transport and buildings sectors. The properties of hydrogen present technical requirements and constraints, which add complications to the adoption of hydrogen technology. This chapter presents conventional and state-of-the-art technologies developed for hydrogen production, purification, storage, distribution, and compression. Developing a hydrogen economy is challenging due to the requirements for large investments, application-specific and sector-based deployment strategies and time scales, market demand, standards, long-term regulatory frameworks, improved technical performance, and
establishment of international collaboration. Prospective areas of research and development are suggested, including novel materials and carbon capture and storage for low-carbon hydrogen production; large-scale renewable production, advanced electrolysers, thermolysis, thermochemical and photoelectrochemical water splitting for zero-carbon hydrogen production; innovative storage design and approach; feasibility study and modeling for extensive distribution networks and strategic refueling infrastructure development.
