Abstract

Irredentism was a recurrent but minor theme in the Italian public debate until 1915 when Italy entered the First World War to achieve the territorial annexation of the eastern Adriatic seaside. Four years later, in Versailles, Italian expansionistic ambitions towards eastern Adriatic were stopped, generating protests from most of the Italian public opinion and the development of a specific literary production related to this event.
This literary production, composed of articles, historical essays, and poems, mainly diffused around 1919 and sought to enhance a revival of some themes of the Venetian Empire in the Italian public memory. This proposal aims to focus on this phenomenon to understand how the creation of an Italian memory about the Venetian rule over eastern Adriatic, was used to legitimate a colonial ambition. The paper will analyse the construction of this memory in the literary works and activities of D'Annunzio about Dalmatia during that period.
